Nashville is the State capital of Tennessee and also the most populous city in the entire state. As you would assume with it being the state capital, the city is the capital seat of Davidson County, where it calls home. Nashville is also the 23rd most heavily populated city in the entire country.

In 2017, Nashville’s economy was deemed the third fastest-growing in the nation, and the city was named the “hottest housing market in the US” by Freddie Mac realtors. In May 2017, census estimates showed Nashville had passed Memphis to become most populated city in Tennessee. Nashville has also made national headlines for its “homelessness crisis”. Rising housing prices and the opioid crisis have resulted in more people being out on the streets: as of 2018, between 2,300 and 20,000 Nashvillians are homeless.

Nashville has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and generally cool winters typical of the Upper South. Monthly averages range from 37.7 °F in January to 79.4 °F in July. They do generally have snowfall, but often nothing heavy. The average annual snowfall is about 6.3 inches, mostly falling in the very early months of the year, but on occasion, storms come through which will drop 6-8inches of snow at once.

A major center for the music industry, country music more than anything, Nashville is commonly known as “Music City”. It is also home to numerous colleges and universities, including Tennessee State University, Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, Fisk University, Trevecca Nazarene University, and Lipscomb University, and is sometimes referred to as “Athens of the South” partly due to the sheer number of educational institutions that call it home. Nashville is also a major center for healthcare, publishing, private prison, banking, automotive, and transportation industries. Entities with headquarters in the city include but aren’t limited to Asurion, Bridgestone Americas, Captain D’s, CoreCivic, Dollar General, Hospital Corporation of America, LifeWay Christian Resources, Logan’s Roadhouse, and Ryman Hospitality Properties.

As the “home of country music”, Nashville has become a major music recording and production center. The Big Three record labels, as well as numerous independent labels, have offices in Nashville, mostly in and around Music Row. Nashville has even been the headquarters of guitar company Gibson since 1984. Since the 1960s, Nashville has been the second-largest music production center (after New York City) in the United States. Nashville’s music industry is estimated to have a total economic impact of about $10 billion per year and to contribute approximately 56,000 jobs to the Nashville area, it’s a huge reason Nashville is half the city it is today.
